The arrival of a new model of national production is always good news for our automotive industry. Just like it did a while ago Fiat with the Cronos launch, Nissan with the arrival of the Frontier and Renault with the addition of the AlaskanToday is the turn of Volkswagen, which began to show some characteristics of its Taos project that is carried out in the plant that the brand has in the town of Pacheco (Buenos Aires, Argentina).
In a technical workshop specially developed for the specialized press, the German firm communicated various aspects related to the mechanical, equipment and safety characteristics of the new SUV of national production.
“For us it is very important to continue providing detailed information about Taos, so that people can have, at the time of its launch, a deep knowledge about the advantages of the product and its differentials. Taos has arrived to become a benchmark in the segment in terms of quality, efficiency and, above all, safety ”, said Martín Massimino, Commercial Director of the Volkswagen Argentina Group.
Thomas Owsianski, President and CEO of the Volkswagen Argentina Group, stressed that “the arrival of Taos is a source of great pride, not only for being an innovative and technological product that demanded an investment in Argentina of USD 650 million, but also because it is the first SUV that our brand produces locally and that will be exported to the entire South American region ”.
The Volkswagen Taos in detail
Leonardo Ezcurra, Executive Release Manager, and Jorge Garcia, Manager of the Technical Center, were in charge of providing all the details about the new member of the Volkswagen SUV family, which It is here to complete the so-called “SUV Offensive” and which will begin serial production in our country in the coming weeks.
Its exterior aesthetics have a modern design that fits in with the image of the brand’s next-generation SUVs. The front part is the one that is most identified with other Volkswagen models and on the sides it shows square wheel arches with rounded corners and wide fenders, to give it a more robust impression.
Its cabin is worked in detail to offer the highest quality and comfort in the segment. For this reason, it has “soft touch” materials, leather inserts and the brand’s new multimedia system, the VW Play, which allows you to activate or deactivate many vehicle functions directly from the screen.
Regarding its dimensions, the Taos will remain at its launch as a benchmark in the segment because its measurements are greater than those of its main competitors. It will be 4,461mm long, 1,841mm wide, 1,626mm high and have a 2,680mm wheelbase. For its part, the trunk has 498 liters of capacity.
Confirmed in the workshop, The Taos will have an EA211 1.4 TSi turbonaftero engine with 150 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The only option available at launch will be associated with a six-speed automatic (Tiptronic, with torque converter) of Chinese origin and front-wheel drive. It is estimated that in a second stage the variant with 4Motion all-wheel drive and the 2.0 TSi turbocharger with 230 hp and 350 Nm will arrive, but this was not confirmed by the brand.
In other markets in the region, Volkswagen spread other variants of engines. For example, for the North American market, the SUV will have a new 1.5 turbo engine, with an eight-speed automatic transmission and another 4Motion version, with the same 1.5 and seven-position automatic transmission. These units will come out of the production that the brand carries out in Mexico, at the Puebla plant.
Among its outstanding equipment, it has Active Info Display is the digital dashboard that offers the possibility of customizing the image of all the information according to the driver’s taste, 10-inch screen, 100% touch, the possibility of downloading applications from the Volkswagen App Store, configure the profile, link a phone through Wireless App Connect and even schedule the maintenance service for our vehicle.
On the security side, It has adaptive cruise control with stop & go, which maintains a selected speed and autonomously maintains the distance with the vehicle in front. In the event that the vehicle ahead comes to a complete stop and starts again within three seconds, the SUV will perform the same movement.
Another differential security element within the segment is the autonomous emergency braking system with pedestrian detection. Based on an always active frontal radar, it identifies the risk by alerting the driver of the possibility of a collision or run over, and in case of not detecting any reaction, it brakes the vehicle autonomously, thus avoiding or reducing the effects of an accident.
Towards the sides, Taos has Blind Spot, which detects objects in the blind spot and warns the driver when a vehicle is approaching from behind while maintaining safety when attempting to change lanes. This last element is complemented by the rear traffic detector, strategically designed to avoid collisions. This system identifies vehicles approaching from behind, alerting the driver and braking automatically in case of not responding to the warning.
Competition in a growing segment
Today, the segment leader is the Jeep Compass. The February numbers of this model of the American brand exceeded 350 units per month. The latest innovation was the incorporation of the Traiilhawk turbodiesel, which is powered by a 2.0, 16-valve engine that delivers 170 hp and a maximum torque of 350 Nm from 1,750 rpm. This version is positioned as the top of the range and most radical of the family.
Below the Compass, the Ford Territory, which arrives imported from China, the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4 and Peugeot 3008. These are just five rivals the new Volkswagen Taos will have when it hits the market, possibly early to mid-May.
